In the past, Bangkok used to be known as the "Venice of the East" due to the amount of homes and buildings that were built on stilts above the river. Progressively over time, most of the canals were filled in and became the streets you see today.
One-tenth of Thailand's entire population lives in Bangkok - the capital and the largest city.
